sentence construction
John Steinbeck, the author of Travels with Charley, uses figurative language to create effects by engaging the reader’s imagination. In this activity, you will identify, analyze, and evaluate the sentence construction in examples of figurative language.
A sentence is a word group that has both a subject and a verb that expresses a complete thought. Often an object is included. The object is a person or thing that receives the action and is often preceded by the verb. For example, John threw the ball. Ball is the object, John is the subject, and threw is the verb in this sentence.
Skim through Travels with Charley to identify sentences that use figurative language. Write four examples in the chart. Identify the subject and object in each example. Then analyze each example to understand the effect the author is trying to create.
