Write a Short Argument
After citing examples of and analyzing vivid verbs in “Thank You, M’am,” you have enough information to write a short argument. Choose one vivid verb from your chart. Write a short argument in which you explain the effect the language has on the reader. Give evidence of how it sets up the conflict of the story. Before writing, read the model short argument provided. Try structuring your argument in the same way.

The author uses the verb “snatch” to explain how quickly and suddenly the boy tried to take the woman’s purse. If the author had used a verb that was more vague, such as “take,” the action would not have seemed as dramatic. Therefore, the vivid language helps set up the conflict of the story by heightening the action of Roger stealing Mrs. Jones’s purse.
