Roots and Affixes
The English root word in pentameter is pent. Pent means “five.” In iambic pentameter, there are five sets of unstressed syllables followed by stressed syllables. By adding the ending –meter, which means “an instrument
or device that is used for measuring,” the meaning of the word changes to “a line of poetry that has five feet.”
