Subordinate conjunctions
“Shakespeare’s Life” is an informational text that tells about the life and work of Shakespeare, as well as key events during this time period. The text uses subordinate conjunctions to transition from one idea to another in the same sentence.

although, as, as though, even though, however, just as, though, whereas, while
These subordinating conjunctions are used to acknowledge, accept, or admit something: I went for a long walk, even though my foot was hurting.
as, because, in order to, since, so that
These subordinating conjunctions are used to show causes: He bought her a present because it was her birthday.
after, as soon as, as long as, before, by the time, once, until, when, whenever, while
These subordinating conjunctions are used to show relationships of time: Before you leave, please wash the dishes.
even if, if, in case, provided that, unless, until
These subordinating conjunctions specify a condition: You will be late unless you hurry up.

Punctuating Subordinate clauses
Subordinate conjunctions begin subordinate, or dependent, clauses in complex sentences. There are two common patterns for writing complex sentences: Independent Clause + Subordinate Clause: Shakespeare’s works are still popular because they present timeless characters and themes.
Subordinate Clause + Independent Clause:
Because they present timeless characters and themes, Shakespeare’s works are
still popular.
Notice that when a sentence begins with a subordinate conjunction,
a comma separates the subordinate clause from the independent clause.
