Write a short argument
In his 1927 letter, Scott H. Peters claims that school textbooks were “unjust” to the lives of Native Americans. Write a short argument in which you explain whether this claim is true or untrue today. Use details from the letter as well as what you recall from recent social studies reading. Before writing, read the model short argument provided. Notice what information is in each of the four sentences. Try structuring your argument in the same way.
ModEl: SHort ArguMEnt
In my opinion, modern textbooks present Native Americans fairly. My text described native cultures and their achievement, such as the irrigation systems of the Zuni people. Short ex- cerpts from Indian statesmen, like Chief Joseph, were included in the chapter, and the book told how whites mistreated native people, such as during the Cherokees’ “Trail of Tears.” For these and other reasons, I think textbooks today are much fairer than in 1927.
