Formal style: Precise Words
“The First Americans” is a letter written to the mayor of Chicago by an official of a Native American organization. Therefore the writer uses a formal style. style is how an author uses words and phrases to form his or her ideas. A formal style tends to have precise, or exact, words.
Skim through “The First Americans,” looking for sentences you like that have precise words. (Use the Precise Words chart if necessary.) Write three sentences in the chart, underlining the precise word or words in each. Then tell why you think the author used this word to make the letter to the mayor more effective. Use the Language Resources: Precise Words chart for support.
