On the following page is a reproduction of a letter from Woody Guthrie to the Library of Congress. Though the library began as a collection of books for members of Congress and a resource for members to conduct research, it has become a sort
of national library and holds the most books of any library in the world. One of the projects of the library is The American Folklife Center, which collects lyrics and recordings of American folk music. Guthrie, who had a long relationship working with members of the center, wrote this letter after receiving a published collection of his song lyrics.
Read the text of the letter on page 13 carefully, highlighting unfamiliar words and marking sentences that seem important. After you’ve read the entire passage, you will write a brief summary of Guthrie’s ideas.
