A – Audience
Who is the audience? Who did the writer anticipate would read or listen to these
lyrics? Who might Guthrie mean by “you” in the text?
P – Purpose
What is the purpose? What is the reason behind the creation of this piece of writing? What do you suppose the writer wants the audience to think or do as a result of reading or listening to these lyrics?
S – Subject
What is the subject of the text—the general topic and main ideas? Be as specific as
you can in identifying and summarizing the subject of each passage.
TONE – Tone
Tone describes the attitude of the author about the subject being discussed. What
clues in the text reveal the speaker’s attitude toward the subject?
Writing Prompt: Based on your current understanding of the biographical excerpt and lyrics, explain how Woody Guthrie’s song lyrics express his ideas about American life. How does he develop these ideas over the course of the song? Be sure to:
• Make a connection between Guthrie’s life and lyrics in a topic sentence.
• Provide several pieces of textual evidence that support your statement.
• Include commentary explaining how the evidence supports your topic sentence.
