Collaborative Practice
Governments have often used images to inspire their citizens to join the military and help their country in times of war. The image below is an editorial cartoon titled “The Slacker Doesn’t Volunteer” by Clifford Berryman, originally published by the Washington Star in 1917, created to encourage military recruitment during World War One. Examine the cartoon closely by applying the OPTIC strategy.
introducing the Strategy: OPTiC
OPTIC is a strategy for systematically analyzing visual texts—including paintings, photographs, advertisements, maps, charts, or graphs—and developing an interpretation regarding the meaning or theme(s) of the text. The acronym stands for Overview, Parts, Title, Interrelationships, and Conclusion.
