introducing the Strategy: SOAPSTone
SOAPSTone is a strategy for analysis of a text to understand an author’s craft. Using this strategy, the reader discusses and identifies the speaker, the occasion, the audience, the purpose, the subject, and the tone and uses this information to analyze and interpret the text.
S – Speaker
What do we know about the speaker? What is her background with the subject? How does this person’s background or position impact the way the text is written?
O – Occasion
What is the immediate occasion? What is the time and place of the piece of writing? What events or concerns prompted the author to write?
