WRITING to SOURCES Creative Writing Prompt: Your teacher will assign you
a role. Use the RAFT strategy to create a monologue from the point of view of
one of the characters from “The Highwayman.” Imagine what he or she might
say about the events of the story as it is. You do not have to write a rhyming poem. Be sure to:
• Review the elements of monologues to decide what to include.
• Use diction, syntax, and punctuation to create a persona and a dramatic effect.
• Vary the length and complexity of your sentence structure (syntax) for effect.
• Carefully sequence the narrative you are retelling.
