Embedded assessment Step 5: Editing and revising
1 Collaborate: Have students take
out the draft they started working on. Distribute a copy of the Biography Writing Rubric to each student. Review the key items in the rubric and ensure that students understand the criteria. Then, distribute a copy of the Expository Writing Exemplar. Read the essay aloud. Then have students read the example, either in pairs or groups, and use the rubric to give the expository writing
a score. Give students ample time to complete the activity and then have students share what score they gave the assignment. Keep a tally and add feedback as appropriate. Students at the Bridging level should be able to complete this activity with little to no support. Students at the Expanding level should concentrate on the first
two paragraphs of the essay. Students at the Emerging level can work on paragraph 1 of the essay. Provide one- on-one conferencing, as needed, to help students understand the criteria they are looking for.

2 Have students refer to the rough draft of the biography they wrote and turn and read what they wrote to the person to their right. Have students use the Expository Writing Rubric to score their drafts.

3 Have students return to their draft biographies and review what they wrote using the self-
check list.
4 Form students into homogenous pairs. Distribute Peer Editing Protocol and have students complete the peer-editing routine. Expanding and Bridging students can complete the activity in pairs. Emerging students should be clustered into small group instruction and guided step

biographical Presentation Informative/Explanatory Writing
my notes
Step 1: Introduction
You will be writing your own biography similar to others you have read in this unit, such as “The Nobel Peace Prize 1993, Biography of Nelson Mandela.” Think about the central idea of that biography and the details that the author used to support the idea.
Biography Writing Prompt
You will write and present a biography about a person who made an important contribution to a particular field: science, mathematics, technology, politics, business, or the arts. You could write about a famous musician, a world leader, or a person who advanced medical science. Be sure your topic is one that truly interests you. Plan a presentation about that person’s life. Be sure to:
• State a central idea about the person you chose and his or her contribution.
• Include supporting details and evidence.
• Use interesting verbs and verb phrases.
• Use transitions to make your text coherent and integrate ideas.
• Write sentences that use correlative conjunctions and parallelism.
• Search for interesting multimedia to include in a presentation about the person
you chose.
Step 2: Brainstorming
Now you are ready to start thinking about the subject of your biographical presentation. Work in small groups or with a partner to brainstorm ideas. Write the names of some famous contemporary or historical people and the contributions they made.
Put a star next to the name of the person you are most interested in researching and writing about.
Take notes about your ideas using the graphic organizer. Put the name of the person in the center circle and write facts you know about his or her life and contributions in the outer circles. If you do not know many facts yet, use the outer circles for questions you have about the person.
