Expository Essay Writing Prompt
Write a draft of your expository essay. Be sure to:
■ Describe the humorous joke, event, or person.
■ Explain why you thought it was humorous.
■ Cite evidence from the essay that explains why it was humorous. ■ Take a serious tone toward your subject.
■ Use precise diction to describe and explain.

can work on their own. Pull Emerging level students aside and give them substantial assistance in completing their charts. When students have finished, pair students at the same level of proficiency. Have Bridging
and Expanding level students try to repeat the information from their charts without referring to them. Encourage Emerging level students to use their charts to give their information.
4 Read the Expository Essay Writing Prompt using the cloze reading technique. Answer any questions students might have.
5 Most essays have an introduction. Without going into structural detail not covered in the activities, assist students in writing an introduction that includes the humorous event/joke/person and ends with the main idea of the essay. You may wish to give students options for the sentence beginning the introduction to their essays, e.g.: I had an experience that was very funny/I heard a joke that made me laugh / I saw something humorous online/on TV./A friend of mine makes me laugh. Explain that after this sentence, students should continue the paragraph by describing the humorous event/ joke/ person. Explain that after the description of the humorous thing or event, students can end their introductory paragraphs with a sentence that leads into the analysis, such as: After reading “Made You Laugh,” I understand why this was funny/Why was this humorous?/What made this so funny?/Why does my friend make me laugh? Diagram this first introductory paragraph on the board, if needed, either as a framework with the humorous event/joke/person left out, or using your own humorous event/ joke/ person as an example.
6 Explain that students will use the information in the second and third columns of their chart to write the rest of their essays. Have them begin work
