b Next, begin a “Comedy” section on the Word Wall. As a class, select half of the words from each list to display. Distribute index cards to individuals or pairs.
c Direct students to write their assigned word in large letters on the front of their card and define the word on the back.
d You may want students to draw an image for the given word. This image should depict something that would create the humor or response.
e The creator of each Word Wall card should hand the card to another student, who will place the word on the Word Wall under an appropriate heading in a position that represents the nuance of the word (in relation to the other words).
f The Language and Writer’s Craft provides an opportunity to practice verbals: gerund, participial, and infinitive forms of verbs used as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs.
After going over the explanations and examples with students, have them work individually or in pairs to identify the verbals in the four items given. You might also challenge students to come up with original examples of sentences with verbals.

Language and Writer’s Craft: Verbals
A verbal is a word (or words) that functions as a verb. Verbals include participles, infinitives, and gerunds.
Each of the verbs above has a participial form in both the present and the past tense:
• Present participle: smirking, smiling, guffawing
• Past participle: smirked, smiled, guffawed
Each verb also has an infinitive form, or “to” form:
• Infinitive: to smirk, to smile, to guffaw
