Working from the Text
8. Referring back to the words and phrases you’ve underlined, write an objective summary of a section of the text by putting the main points into your own words. Remember that a summary is a broad overview of the text; stick to the main points by writing about big ideas and excluding smaller details.
Using Precise Diction to Analyze Humor
9. To analyze a text carefully, one must use specific words to describe the humor and explain the intended effect. Work collaboratively to define terms and to understand the nuances of words with similar denotations (definitions). You have already encountered some of these words.

7 To complete the Working from the Text section, you might ask students to summarize sections individually and then share with a group to be sure all students have all the information. Students could then revise their first effort to hand in. Or students could work with a partner to summarize the text.
8 Review the meaning and importance of nuance (Unit 1), and then ask students to preview the lists of words in the chart and put a checkmark next to ones they are familiar with.
9 Next, form small groups, and give each group at least one thesaurus and dictionary. Split the class in half, assigning one half of the class the words to describe humor and
the other half the words to describe responses. Each group should work as a team to define as many terms as they can in ten minutes.
0 When the time is up, pair students with a partner from the opposite side of the room to share definitions and connotations of each term. During this discussion, students should record or revise any notes they have already taken.
a Encourage students to demonstrate or act out the more difficult terms when they are working in their pairs.
