Q: Question (Unfamiliar)
ACADEMIC VOCABULARY Improvisation
involves composing, arranging, and acting
out a scene without advance preparation. Improvisation requires actors to think up lines on the spur of the moment.
3. With a partner or small group, consider your prior knowledge of each of the terms in your QHT chart and discuss which of these categories you would place them into. In groups or pairs share understandings and definitions of those words you feel confident to teach others.
4. The script excerpt you are about to read is from William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In this play, four characters are involved in a very complicated conflict that is summarized in the statements below.
• Hermia and Lysander are in love.
• Hermia’s father is opposed to their marriage, so they run away together. • Demetrius is also in love with Hermia, so he follows them into the forest. • Helena is Hermia’s best friend.
• Helena is in love with Demetrius, so she follows him.
• While all four are in the forest, a fairy puts a spell on Lysander and Demetrius so they both fall in love with Helena.
• When Lysander and Demetrius declare their love for her, Helena thinks they are making fun of her, and that Hermia is in on the joke.
• Hermia is shocked that Lysander suddenly seems to hate her.
With a small group of your peers, take on the roles of the characters in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and use improvisation to act out the situation described in the summary statements above.
