Lesson: Parts of Speech Overview (continued)
Identifying Parts of Speech
Many words can function as different parts of speech. The way a word is used determines what part of speech it is. Noun: The duck’s down is soft. (names a thing)
Adverb: We knocked the wall down. (modifies a verb)
Adjective: I think he is down in the mouth. (modifies a pronoun)
Preposition: Let’s go down the road. Check Your Understanding
Either on your own or with classmates, think of words that can be used as three or more different parts of speech. Think of at least three such words. For each word, write at least three sentences showing the word used as different parts of speech. Identify the word’s part of speech in each sentence.
EXAMPLE: run
Noun: Noah is going for a run.
Verb: How fast can you run a mile?
Adjective: The movie’s run time is 82 minutes.
