Lesson: Coordinating and Subordinating Conjunctions
Learning Target
• Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
Conjunctions help the reader understand connections between ideas. They are like signposts that tell readers where sentences are going.
Coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, nor, so yet, for) link ideas that are of similar importance.
Blue and green are my favorite colors.
We can go to the library or stay home.
I’d like to go to sleep early tonight, but I need to work on my science project.
Subordinating conjunctions (such as although, because, even though, so that, unless, until, when, while) introduce adverb clauses (dependent clauses that act as adverbs). They often link an idea of lesser importance, which is expressed in a dependent clause to an idea of greater importance, which is expressed in an independent clause.
Although Travis has learned his lines, he needs to practice his movements onstage. Samantha is nervous because the cast members are not all here for the show yet. Kim will be helping in the box office unless she has a schedule conflict.
Whenever there is a scene change, the actors hurry to their new places.
