Lesson: Parts of Speech Overview (continued)
Identifying Parts of Speech
Many words can function as different parts of speech. The way a word is used determines what part of speech it is. Noun: The old well still has water in it. (names a thing)
Verb: Tears of joy well in his eyes. (expresses action)
Adverb: We performed well today. (modifies a verb)
Adjective: She was sick last week but is well now. (modifies a pronoun) Interjection: Well, I don’t know. (expresses emotion)
Check Your Understanding
Either on your own or with classmates, think of words that can be used as three or more different parts of speech. Think of at least three such words. For each word, write at least three sentences showing the word used as different parts of speech. Identify the word’s part of speech in each sentence.
EXAMPLE: run
Noun: I’m going for a run.
Verb: How fast can you run to the corner and back? Adjective: The show’s run time is 42 minutes.
