Subordinating conjunctions
Adverbial clauses often start with a subordinating conjunction, such as after, because, or although and are followed by a comma. The adverbial clause is followed by another clause that connects to the idea.
The following subordinating conjunctions in bold are used to introduce adverbial clauses. Notice the comma at the end of each adverbial clause.
“While the purchasing power ..., “When it comes to ...,

Language Resources: Adverbials
An adverb is a word that is used to modify a verb, adjective, or even another adverb to add detail. For example: Research shows that kids spend lots of money. The word lots describes how kids spend money.
An adverbial clause is a group of words that act like an adverb. It has a subject and a verb, but it is not a complete sentence. An example of an adverbial clause is underlined in the sentence: When kids have a lot of money, they make their own decisions how to spend it.
Skim through $211 Billion and So Much to Buy, looking for adverbial clauses that introduce facts. Write the adverbial clause in the first column of the chart. Then write the main clause that completes the fact in the second column. Use the Language Resources: Adverbials chart for support.
