Multiple-Meaning Words
The word jam has several meanings. It can be used as a verb meaning “to fill a place.” It can also be used as a noun to mean “a difficult situation.” And finally, it can mean “a thick sweet food made from fruit and sugar.”

Authors use verbs or verb phrases to make their writing more descriptive and interesting. The following verb phrases in the left-hand column are used in Tangerine. With a partner, talk about what image each of these phrases makes in your mind and write a sentence to describe it in the right column.
