Step 4: Drafting
Use your completed graphic organizer and brainstorming document to help you as you begin to draft your expository essay. Remember that your draft does not have to be perfect but should include the language features that you have learned about in this unit, especially correct sentence construction, sentence variety through the use of dependent and independent clauses, transitions to add details about the central idea, and vivid verbs and adjectives.
Before you begin the draft of your expository essay, review the scoring guide with your partner so that you understand how your essay will be assessed. Ask your partner questions if you do not understand any of part of the scoring guide.
Be sure your draft has
• supporting details and evidence
• a variety of dependent and independent clauses
• transitions to connect details to the central idea
• correct sentence construction with subjects and objects • vivid verbs and adjectives.

Look at the peer editing checklist that your partner completed and discuss it together, using these sentence frames. Takes notes on your discussion.

• Another thing I liked about the essay is ______.
• One part of the essay that could have been clearer is ______.
• One part of the essay that needs stronger support is _____.
• One thing I think the writer could do to improve the essay is ____.
Use your notes to help you revise your draft. Complete your revised draft on a computer, if possible. You may include graphics or photos from the Internet to include in your final draft, but make sure they are appropriate. Check your final essay against the scoring guide before you submit it to your teacher.
