P — Purpose
What is the purpose? What is the reason behind the creation of this piece of writing? What do you suppose the writer wants the audience to think or do as a result of reading this text?
S — Subject
What is the subject of the text—the general topic and main ideas? Be as specific as
you can in identifying and summarizing the subject of each passage.
T — Tone
Tone describes the attitude of the author toward the subject being discussed. What
clues in the text reveal the speaker’s attitude toward the subject?
Writing Prompt: Using textual evidence to support your thinking, write a paragraph in which you discuss how the occasion or intended audience for Guthrie’s letter helps the reader understand his tone and purpose. Be sure to:
• Write a topic sentence that identifies the occasion and intended audience. • Choose several pieces of appropriate textual evidence.
• Explain the significance of your textual evidence.
