What are the author’s central claims and main ideas in this speech?
TONE – Tone
Where in the writing do you see clues about the writer’s attitude toward the subject? Does the tone change over the course of the speech? Look for strong word choices, imagery, or use of figurative language like similes or metaphors.
Writing Prompt: Using textual evidence to support your thinking, summarize the speaker’s purpose and explain how he uses emotional and logical strategies to convince his audience. Be sure to:
• Write a topic sentence that identifies the author’s purpose.
• Choose several pieces of appropriate textual evidence.
• Explain the significance of your textual evidence in the development of the text.
