Purpose: What is the reason behind the creation of this speech? What do you suppose Reagan wanted the audience to think or do as a result of hearing the speech?
Tone: What is the speaker’s attitude toward the subject? Look for strong word choices, imagery, or use of figurative language, such as similes or metaphors.
Writing Prompt: Based on your current understanding of the passage, summarize the main ideas or claims in Reagan’s speech. Be sure to:
• Identify two or more main ideas or claims.
• Provide textual evidence of how he develops these ideas over the course of the
speech.
• Include commentary about how he uses tone, pathos, or counterclaim to reach
his audience.
