Language and Writer’s Craft: Verbals
A verbal is a word (or words) that functions as a verb. Verbals include participles, infinitives, and gerunds.
Each of the verbs above has a participial form in both the present and the past tense:
• Present participle: smirking, smiling, guffawing
• Past participle: smirked, smiled, guffawed Each verb also has an infinitive form, or “to” form:
• Infinitive: to smirk, to smile, to guffaw
