In this activity, you will read several texts about Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Think about how they each present their subjects in different ways.
Setting a Purpose for Reading
• The next two texts were written to remember and praise Abraham Lincoln after his assassination. As you read, underline words and phrases that the authors use to portray Lincoln as a heroic figure.
• You may use the TP-CASTT strategy to aid your analysis of the poem.
• Circle unknown words and phrases. Try to determine the meaning of the words by using context clues, word parts, or a dictionary.
