Working from the Film
Summarizing involves reading text or listening to a speaker and then restating the main ideas in your own words. The purpose of a summary is to capture the essential information without using the author’s or speaker’s exact words.
1. Write a brief summary of your notes on setting, plot, or character.
2. Share your notes with your group, and take notes to complete the chart for the other two elements while other group members are reporting.
3. With your class, identify possible themes, or central messages, for the film Up. Remember that a theme should be a message, not just a topic. If Up is about the topic of adventure, the theme is the message the film communicates about adventure.
4. With your group, discuss plot, setting, and character in Walk Two Moons. Identify and discuss possible themes.
