1 Ask a student volunteer to read aloud the Learning Targets. When finished, explain to students that in the next two lessons, they will complete a close read of selections from the unit text: “Made You Laugh.”
2 Introducethegenrebyreminding students that Made You Laugh is an essay. It gives information about
why people laugh. Detail that the information in this story is not personal information based on the author’s experience, but rather it is information the author has collected in different sources and organized. As they read, tell students to notice the way that the author writes his essay because later in this unit, students will write their own essays.
3 Introduce the annotating activity
by calling students’ attention to the directions. Read the directions aloud. Then review the model annotations with students, and add a few of your own doing a Think Aloud. Make sure to place a star next to the last sentence in the second paragraph that indicates what

the essay will be about (why people laugh). Students may be challenged in finding the this topic sentence because it is a question. Point out that it is the question that tells the reader exactly what to expect as they read – the essay will consist of an answer to this question.
4 Before you read the third paragraph, ask students if they know any funny magazines or comics. Call on volunteers to answer. Ask the volunteers what makes the magazines or comics funny. Explain that MAD magazine is a magazine that is written to make people laugh. Read aloud the first three sentences of the third paragraph. Point out that the question in the first sentence is asked of the reader. Explain that, as in the first section, a question is used as the topic sentence. This is the sentence that is answered by everything that follows in this section, so the question is the main idea.

1 Would you like to know a language everyone in the world understands? You already do—because you laugh. Any two people from vastly different cultures who don’t speak a word of the other’s language still know exactly what is meant when the other person laughs.
2 Think of laughter as the unofficial language of Earth. Yet how much do any of us really understand about humor?
On the Laugh Track
3 What makes things funny? READ asked John Ficarra, the editor of MAD magazine. After all, he should know. Here’s what he said: “Monkeys. They’re unbeatable. For example, show a photo of a dentist— not funny. Show a photo of a dentist with a monkey in his chair, and it’s comedy gold. Try this theory out on a few of your family photos, and you’ll see.” OK, so monkeys are funny. What else? How about this?
4 Two hunters were in the woods, when one collapsed. He didn’t seem to be breathing. The other called the emergency number and said, “My friend is dead! What can I do?” The operator said, “Calm down,
I can help. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.” After a second of silence on
