1 Ask students to follow along as you read the Learning Targets aloud. After each Learning Target, ask a student volunteer to explain it using his or her own words. Expand on the explanation given by the student volunteer, and invite other students to explain why this learning target is important or how it can help them be better speakers
or writers. When finished, explain to students that in this lesson, they will learn vocabulary about essays that will help them understand the entire unit.
2 Ask a student volunteer to read the Word Connections box. Ask a different student volunteer to say which letters are the same in all three words. Say: Cognates often have the same root.
We have to be careful when we identify roots of words. For example, all three of these words include the letters d-i-c-t but this is not the root. Actually, t is part of the suffix -tion. Remind students that a suffix is a group of letters added to the end of a root or root word. Give them other examples, such as graduation, explanation, evaluation, competition, creation, etc. Say: But today we are
NOT looking at the suffix –tion. The information in the Word Connections box tells us that these given words all come from the Latin root dict-, which means talk. Some other languages have

words that come from this same Latin root. For example, the Spanish word that means “to say” is very similar. Ask if anyone knows this Spanish word, and if no student volunteers the answer, write decir on the board. Call on a student volunteer to pronounce the word, or pronounce it yourself, and have students repeat it.
3 Explain that knowing about root words can often help in understanding and the meanings of other words. Distribute the Roots and Affixes Graphic Organizer. Have students write the root dict- in the middle and work together in pairs to complete the graphic organizer to find as many words as possible that use the root dict-. (contradict, dictate, dictation) Provide dictionaries for student use. When students are done, have each pair share out an example.
4 Introduce the literary terms activity by asking students to look at the QHT criteria on page 142. Ask students to read each criterion chorally, one at a time. Clarify each term using thumbs

Cognates
The English word diction, the Spanish word dicción, and the Haitian Creole word diction are cognates. They all mean “a way of speaking” and come from the same Latin root dict-, meaning “to speak.”

The chart presents words and phrases you will use in discussion and writing. Think about each word or phrase. Circle Q, H, or T to indicate how well you know it. Work with a partner, asking your partner to explain each word or phrase. Listen closely to the explanation. Then write your partner’s name in the “In Our Own Words” column, along with his or her condensed idea.
