1 Ask students to follow along as you read the Learning Targets aloud using the oral cloze strategy. When finished, explain to students that in this lesson, they will learn about verbs and verb phrases.
2 Call students attention to the Word Connections box on page 100. Read aloud the three definitions of the word jam. Give examples of each meaning. For example, have several students
jam together to show the meaning “crowded.” Show a picture of a jam sandwich for another meaning. Finally, for the third meaning, explain that jam can be to be in a difficult situation, or to have a problem.
3 Turn students’ attention to the Language Resources: Verbs and Verb Phrases chart on page 100. Explain that a verb is a word that shows action in speaking or writing. Using verbs helps show what is happening. Write on the board: She walked to the door. He ran to the door. Ask: What are the verbs in these sentences? Elicit from students that the verbs are the underlined words. They show the action in each sentence.
4 Collaborate: Have student turn to the person to their left for a quick think-pair- share-write activity. Divide the class

into four groups and assign each group one verb: vaulting, jamming, pushing, or swallowed. Have pairs write an original sentence for their verb. When students are done, have each pair share one of their sentences.
5 Remind students that Tangerine has a lot of action, so many action verbs are used. students attention to an example from the first paragraph of the text: I stood there.
Then, have students take part in a Verb Treasure Hunt by skimming page 98 and circling as many verbs as they can find in one minute. When time is up, have students read out the verbs they located and list them on the board, confirming or clarifying as needed. Keep the verbs visible for the next activity.
