8 Pair students of similar proficiency levels. Students at the Bridging level should be able to find four or more examples to complete the entire practice chart on their own without support. Students at the Expanding level can work in pairs to complete the chart with very little support. Work with Emerging students as a group to provide support completing the first two examples. While students work, walk around the classroom answering questions and clarifying as needed.
9 When students are done, have each group share one each of sentences

assess
Use the following rubric and sample student responses to formatively assess students’ ability to understand the How English Works skill: Using Verbs and Verb Phrases.
Emerging: Are students able to recognize the difference between singular and plural subjects and verbs?
Student example: Today the school strongly discourages peanut products in the cafeteria. Nut products are posing dangers for some people.
Expanding/Bridging: Are students able to understand how singular and plural subjects and verbs should agree?
Student example: Last month, two students suffered allergic reactions to peanuts. The school staff needs to be aware of students’ medical conditions.
adapt
If students need additional help understanding verb and verb phrases, have them brainstorm several singular and plural subjects and write them on the board. Then go through each, and have students think of verbs to add to them.

6 Turn students’ attention to the activity on the bottom of page 97. Read the directions aloud as students follow along. Model doing an example for the entire class, using a Think Aloud. Write the following on the board: A student an allergic reaction. (suffer) Say: I could add the word is and put an -ing on the end of the word suffer to make the word suffering.
Or I could add either “s” or “ed” to the word suffer to make it a single verb, too. Write each sentence out using those alternatives: A student suffered an allergic reaction. A student suffers an allergic reaction. A student is suffering an allergic reaction. Have student volunteers read them aloud. Using any of these verbs or verb phrases would make the verb single and correct.
7 Model another example on the board: Write: Schools should safe food lists for parties. (provide) Say: I know that the word schools is a plural subject so the verb could be
