Emerging: With support, are students able to paraphrase a story into a compound sentence?
Student example: Hadassah went to the store and then to the park. Expanding: With some support, are students able to paraphrase a
story into at least two compound sentences?
Student example: Julissa went to the mall and then she got a haircut last weekend. She also took her dog for a walk and did homework.
Bridging: Are students able to paraphrase a story into several compound sentences?
Student example: Last night, Sokha did homework, helped her brother with his homework, and then went to the library. She also worked on a project for science and studied for history. Finally she went to bed at 9, but she couldn’t sleep.
adapt
If students need additional help understanding paraphrasing,
try this activity: Provide pairs with note cards with compound sentences on them. Have them take turns reading each card and then ask the other student to paraphrase the sentence. Repeat as needed.
