You are writing a definition essay about the concept of the Hero’s Journey. Which of the following is a clear and well-organized introduction to the topic?
a. Do you want to know why so many stories feature a hero? Many quest stories throughout the history of literature have followed a pattern known as the Hero's Journey. One of the most important parts of this story structure is known as the Return, in which the hero returns from the quest transformed by the experience, which usually includes trials of various kinds and help from friends. Before the Return, other important stages happen, including the Departure and the Initiation, which both have their own sub-parts. Another name for the Hero's Journey is the monomyth.
b. Have you ever noticed how many stories seem similar even though their characters and settings are completely different? Many stories follow a well-known pattern in which a hero pursues a quest, faces trials, is helped by friends, and returns. While there are many variations on this structure, the basic pattern remains the same. Knowing the parts of the pattern and how they fit together helps us understand what heroism is and how stories have been told about heroic quests for thousands of years.
c. The Hero's Journey archetype is well known and complex. The basic pattern changes in its details. Knowing what heroism is helps us understand it and what it means. Stories have been told about heroic quests for thousands of years by many different people.
d. The Hero's Journey pattern in stories allows us to conclude that story structure is very stable across time and across cultures. In this essay, I will discuss the specific parts of the Hero's Journey archetype, what they mean, and how they are used. Understanding this well-known pattern helps us interpret all kinds of stories by giving us the keys to their structure. The Hero's Journey pattern includes stories both old and new about heroes and antiheroes.
