In Unit 1, students demonstrate mastery through writing a definition essay in which they explain their interpretation of what it means to be an American through the use of definition strategies and perspectives encountered in the unit. After examining a variety of texts that range from foundational documents of the United States to poems and short stories about immigration, money, and the American Dream, students also craft a synthesis essay defending, challenging, or qualifying the statement, “America still provides access to the American Dream.”
