7. Knowledge and Ideas: What is the author’s argument? Is it effective?
The author’s argument is that his son is far from the “slow learner” the teacher has labeled him and that he deserves to be treated with respect in the classroom. He uses logic and emotional appeals to craft an effective argument. RI.9–10.8

The author establishes a connection with the reader
by writing that his son is a “typical Indian kid” and then questions why his son is already labeled as a “slow learner.”
Claim
Despite the label of “slow,” Wind-Wolf has “already been through quite an education compared with his peers in Western Society.”
Support
Wind-Wolf’s education goes beyond the basics. He was “with his mother in South Dakota while she danced for seven days straight in the hot sun, fasting, and piercing herself in the sacred Sun Dance Ceremony of a distant tribe.”
Concessions/ Refutations
“He may have trouble writing his name on a piece of paper, but he knows how to say it and many other things in several different Indian languages.”

“Please remember that this is the primary year of his education and development. All I ask is that you work
with me, not against me, to help educate my child in the best way. If you don’t have the knowledge, preparation, experience, or training to effectively deal with culturally different children, I am willing to help you with the few resources I have available or direct you to such resources.”
