In Unit 1, students demonstrate mastery through writing a reflective essay in which they explain their cultural identity through the use of well-chosen, relevant, and sufficient evidence. After examining a variety of texts that range from personal reflections to short stories and art, students also craft a synthesis essay in response to an argumentative claim, using textual evidence from a variety of sources.
