As you look at these units, note the following:
• Pre-AP learning strategies help students develop the higher-order thinking skills, knowledge, and behaviors necessary to succeed in AP classes and postsecondary education.
• Supports for English learners and struggling readers include Leveled Differentiated Instruction tips located in critical and challenging parts of the Teach section, and graphic organizers specially designed for language development.
• Support for close reading includes standards-based, text-dependent questions following each text. Scaffolds located in the Teacher Edition build teachers’ capacity to help all students answer rigorous text-dependent questions.
• Language and Writer’s Craft features provide direct instruction on grammar and usage concepts and opportunities for student practice.
• Check Your Understanding tasks provide teachers with formative assessment opportunities, and Assess and Adapt teacher guidance helps them evaluate student work and plan for future lessons.
• Frequent writing prompts provide practice in narrative, explanatory, and argumentative writing, as well as writing to sources and explaining how an argument works.
• Embedded Assessments guide students through the steps of producing high-quality written and oral work, including essays, multimedia presentations, speeches, and dramatic performances.
