Another Perspective on the World
My Notes
Explanatory Writing Prompt
Revisit your quickwrite and elaborate on the self-perception you presented, explaining it to your readers with more detailed imagery. Revise it for syntactical variety and clarity. Be sure to:
• Use vivid imagery and precise, sensory language to present and explain your self-perception
• Vary syntax for effect.
Check Your Understanding
Create a visual representation of your self-perception drawing on the images from your expanded quickwrite. Consider your composition, and arrange images strategically to enhance ideas presented in your text.

ACTIVITY 1.9 continued
14 Direct students’ attention to the writing prompt. Students should revisit prior work—their initial quickwrites containing a self- perception—and elaborate on them by including detailed imagery and syntactical variety. Students should refer to the graphic organizer to aid them in creating sentences with varied syntax.
15 Instruct students to create a visual representation based on their written self-perception.
16 Revisit the Essential Question: How does perspective influence perception?
17 Remind students to read and respond to the Independent Reading Link in this activity.
Make sure students’ written responses have detailed imagery and syntactical variety. Creating a visualization to support their writing will be important scaffolding for
the Embedded Assessment. Check for understanding by evaluating whether a student’s sketch reflects the use of vivid imagery in the student’s written response.
If students need additional help making a visual representation, use the OPTIC strategy to generate ideas. This will move their representation beyond the literal interpretation.
