In Unit 1, students demonstrate mastery through creating an argumentative photo essay in which they express a position on a controversial issue using a carefully curated set of images, captions, and written materials. Using literary theory lenses—including Reader Response and Cultural Criticism—students closely read a variety of challenging texts and apply the concepts of perspective and perception to a reflective essay exploring the theme of being a “stranger in the village.”
